Origanum vulgare is a species of the Lamiaceae family found in the Mediterranean region. The subspecies Origanum vulgare ssp. Hirtum, also known as Greek oregano, is a plant native to the southern Balkan Peninsula and Turkey. The name oregano comes from the ancient Greek (origanon) and indicates the plant's preference for higher altitudes in Mediterranean climates.
Its therapeutic use has been known since ancient times. In ancient Greece, it was used to treat colic symptoms and skin conditions. In the traditional medicine of many peoples, it is mainly used for bronchial disorders, as a digestive aid and antiseptic, and to treat colds, indigestion, and stomach disorders.
Ιs considered one of the most powerful essential oils due to its main component, carvacrol. It has been used for centuries in traditional medicine to strengthen the immune, gastrointestinal, and respiratory systems, as well as for its antiseptic properties.

The combination of these with gamma-terpinene and p-cymene, as well as with the other components, gives the essential oil anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Its use is associated with gastrointestinal health, helps with physical pain (and headaches) and promotes good respiratory function.
Systematic internal use acts as an adjunct to the body's defenses. Externally, its use is indicated for skin infections. Oregano essential oil is also considered a natural food preservative, inhibiting the growth of food-borne bacteria and the production of toxins.
Cooking Add 1–2 drops to 200 ml of olive oil to use in your recipes and/or replace dried oregano in meat dishes, red sauces, and soups.
