Sage (English name sage or common sage) is a perennial, aromatic shrub of the Lamiaceae family. It is native to the Mediterranean region and has a long history of medicinal and culinary use. It is believed to have been used in ancient Egypt to treat stomach ailments, toothache, and asthma. The works of the Romans, Pliny, Dioscorides, and Galen refer to its therapeutic use for cramps, coughs, hoarseness, and ulcers, while botanists have also used it for infections and to improve memory.
In traditional medicine, it is used for inflammation and infections of the mucous membranes of the throat and mouth (stomatitis, gingivitis, and pharyngitis). Internally, essential oil is used for symptoms of indigestion and excessive sweating.
The flowers of the plant are harvested and fresh are subjected to steam distillation, which produces sage essential oil with a light yellow color. On our farm, we grow organic sage, a plant native to Greece, and the price of the essential oil we produce from it is particularly competitive in relation to the high quality of the final product, which is controlled by scientific institutions.
