Το Σπαθόχορτο (Hypericum perforatum), επίσης γνωστό και ως βαλσαμόχορτο είναι φυτό της οικογένειας Hypericaceae. Ονομάζεται σπαθόχορτο, γιατί στην αρχαιότητα το χρησιμοποιούσαν μετά τις μάχες με σπαθιά. Η Λατινική ονομασία του φυτού «διάτρητον» (perforatum), οφείλεται στα στίγματα που φέρουν τα φύλλα του, τα οποία είναι εμφανή όταν κρατηθούν μπροστά στο φως, δίνοντας τους έτσι την «διάτρητη» εμφάνιση.
Το σπαθόχορτο, που φυτρώνει σε ξηρά και ηλιόλουστα μέρη, είναι ένα ποώδες, πολυετές φυτό με καταγωγή από την Ευρασία και τη Βόρεια Αφρική. Από την αρχαιότητα ήταν γνωστό για τις ηρεμιστικές του ιδιότητες. Ο Γαληνός και ο Διοσκουρίδης το αναφέρουν στις μελέτες τους. Παραδοσιακά θεωρείται ότι βοηθάει στην στην αποκατάσταση της συναισθηματικής ισορροπίας
