Origanum vulgare is a species of the Lamiaceae family found in the Mediterranean region. The subspecies Origanum vulgare ssp. Hirtum, also known as Greek oregano, is a plant native to the southern Balkan Peninsula and Turkey. The name oregano comes from the ancient Greek (origanon) and indicates the plant's preference for higher altitudes in Mediterranean climates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
